Internal Transport
Belize City is connected with the main towns and cayes by a number of local airlines, which fly from the municipal airstrip and the international airport. There is also a scheduled boat service that runs from Belize City to Ambergris Caye, Caye Chapel and Caye Caulker; and from Corozal Town to San Pedro.
Belize's main towns are linked by all-weather roads; however, these roads (for example the Manatee Highway, running from the Western Highway to Dangriga) can be cut off during the annual rainy season, particularly at ferry points. Cars may be hired in Belize City, Ladyville, Dangriga and San Ignacio (drivers must be 25 or over). A 4WD vehicle is advisable for travels south of Belize City. The speed limit is 90 kph (56 mph) on highways and 40 kph (25 mph) on most other roads. Local driving standards are poor and road traffic accidents are a common occurrence.
Travellers may use the cheap bus services that link most towns and villages, and to the Mexican and Guatemalan borders. However, although there are some air-conditioned services, most use hot and overcrowded old US school buses.
