Internal Transport

Travel in Azerbaijan is restricted, and many regions near the border require special permission. Much of the country's 57,770km (34,346 miles) of roads are in poor condition and are badly lit. In addition, local cars are poorly maintained and drivers do not adhere to traffic regulations. Car hire is available from international firms in Baku; 4x4 vehicles are recommended for journeys into the mountains.

There is an underground system in Baku, but this is badly maintained and the system is often overcrowded and unsafe. Buses, likewise, tend to be overcrowded. Taxis are available for travel within cities; however, visitors must always negotiate the fare before they start their journey, and be aware that the initial quoted rates are likely to be unreasonably high.
