Winchester School of Art (Student Life)

Accommodation: Student village for 1-2 years; town expensive (look on noticeboards and local papers).

Eating: Refectory with good, slightly overpriced meals - good veggie food. Meal from £1.60 on campus. Various places in town from cafes to pizza (eg PizzaExpress), Chinese, Indian (eg Suhels Balti House), kebab and chip shops.

Drinking: Pint £1.50 in SU bar. City full of pubs, many of distinctive individual character but none cheap. Good places - The Willow Tree, The Mash Tun (student discounts), Railway Inn (live music), The Vine, Greens Wine Bar (live jazz bands). Local brew, Marstons.

Nightlife: Loads of SU events: many up-and-coming bands, video and dance nights. In town, 3 theatres plus Tower Arts Centre; Theatre Royal has good student reductions: cinema; nightclub - and an early-closing club/pub called The Porthouse. Guildhall has variety of exhibitions, craft, book and antique fairs. Southampton bigger and better.

Locals: Not all that friendly.

Sports: Very good recreation centre situated close to college with excellent leisure pool and fitness complex (with a student package). Competitive/fun football team. Group and individual sport available; cheapest on day-user ticket or with SU card.

Travel: Close to London.

Financial help: Access fund.

Jobs: Jobs available but becoming more difficult to obtain - mainly barwork, cleaning, shopwork and waiter/waitressing.

Annual living costs: The minimum amount students say you need to live on each year (covering all living expenses but excluding tuition fees) is £4500 (in School accommodation), £3920 (in private accommodation).

Best features: Close-knit, general atmosphere and ethos.

Worst features: It floods sometimes.
