London Metropolitan University (Student Life)

Accommodation: 3 halls of residence at City, 4 at North. Cheap private housing around Whitechapel, Bethnal Green, Stratford, Hackney, Wood Green, Manor House, Seven Sisters etc. Look in Loot, Evening Standard and uni accommodation offices.

Eating: Canteen-style food in Uni. Bernie's Diner below the City union is great, varied and cheap. Enrico's opposite the North Campus union's offices (3 different meals a day - meat, chicken or vegetarian). Lots of good places to eat, esp the curry houses on Brick Lane (30 secs from City Campus) or the restaurants on Upper St (by North Campus).

Drinks: Union bars and clubs are excellent and cheap, especially by London standards (often £1 per drink during happy hours). Local bars, pubs and clubs are everywhere, but more expensive.

Nightlife: On-site bars and clubs cheap with a variety of events, society nights out available, good DJs and bands brought in. London accessible but pricey - local nightlife found on Brick lane, Shoreditch, Upper St and Camden.

Locals: Most happy to cater for students.

Sports: Two small gyms at City, excellent one at North. Large number of diverse sports teams and clubs. Anyone can participate.

Travel: Very good access to tube, buses, night buses, trains and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR).

Annual living costs: The minimum amount students say you need to live on each year (covering all living expenses but excluding tuition fees) is £10,000.

Hardship funds: Limited and targeted access fund, short term emergency loans from university.

Jobs: SU and university campus services employ as many students as possible. Local jobs easy to come by (bars, shops telesales etc). University has jobs and careers office, regularly updated job adverts board.

Informal name: London Met.

Best features: Quality of most courses, diversity of students, SU support services, central location, community feel between students active in the Union, sports teams, bars.

Worst features: Parts of admin and enrolment. Costs of studying in London.
