Bangor University (Student Life)

Accommodation: College accommodation priority to 1st and 3rd years. Private housing, readily available, average rent £45 per week; check out through accommodation office or the Bangor Mail.

Eating: £2-£2.50 on campus. SU Freddies and Glan (omnivorous, veggie or vegan); also Mrs P's Tea Bar. Herbs Restaurant (range of salads and health foods); Fat Cat good, £6-£7. Various British, Italian, Greek, Indian, Chinese eats.

Drinking: SU bars (£1.50-£2 a pint). Extensive range.

Nightlife: SU is major North Wales venue; big gigs (eg Ministry of Sound), bands (eg Top Loader, Steps, Mark & Lard), dance nights; lots of pubs, one local nightclub.

Locals: Friendly and getting better.

Sports: Student reductions in university centre (squash, weights, multigym, climbing wall, large multipurpose hall); athletics track, cricket, football, rugby (including women's). Local pool with diving facilities.

Travel: SU travel office, with many discount schemes. Overseas scholarships eg Canada/US/EU. Cheap boats to Dublin (popular student pastime!). Train and coach services. Local bus service reliable. SU runs minibus lift service after evening events.

Financial help: College access funds available. SU can give short term loans, in exceptional circumstances.

Jobs: University Job Mart helps students find part-time work. Uni and SU employ students in bars and catering outlets. Most types of casual work, including specialist and holiday work, especially in outdoor pursuits. Few jobs for non-welsh speakers.

Best features: Friendliness, beautiful location, convenience, close-knit community.

Worst features: The weather.
