1 Week Before the Move
By this stage, you should have completed most of your packing and should only have minor items to pack such as food and clothes.
You'll also need to do the following:
- Have your post redirected at the local post office. Alternatively, if you will be moving locally, have your post held for you.
- Contact the local authority and inform them of the day you're moving. You may be entitled to a refund of part of your council tax.
- Check that the removal firm has all the instructions and information necessary, including maps and instructions how to find your old and new homes. Confirm the moving date and time.
- Dismantle any furniture that cannot be moved in one piece. Keep all the nuts, bolts and screws in a labelled bag.
- Arrange to drop off your keys with your estate agent and collect the keys to your new home.
- If necessary, apply for a residents' parking permit or special permission from the council or police for the removal van to park outside your current or new house.
- Return any library books and DVDs or anything borrowed.
- Make lots of copies of the map and instructions on how to find your new home and give them to anyone who will be involved in your move.
- Make sure that you've got a telephone number on the removal day where you can be contacted by anyone who may need to get hold of you urgently. This could be a mobile phone, or that of a friend who can pass on any messages.
- Start packing your Essentials Kit.
