Southampton University (Student Life)
Accommodation: 1st years in halls; accommodation for disabled students; some married quarters. Private housing reasonable (accommodation office helps).
Eating: Wide range of food at SU Coffee Bar (meal £2), university Piazza and Garden Court. Loads of takeaways near campus and halls; good food in pubs; plenty of good restaurants for when the parents visit.
Drinking: 4 SU bars; numerous hall bars, reasonably priced for the south (£1.60 Carling, £1.80 Caffreys). Also pubs in Portswood and the Polygon (main student areas).
Nightlife: SU has new nightclub. Excellent SU ents: discos, balls, comedy, films, quiz nights, karaoke and bands (small, local to large, well-known eg Athlete).
Locals: Good although students best avoid the Flowers Estate.
Sports: Excellent sports facilities: 6 squash courts, sports hall, dance studio, sports complex with swimming pool, multi-gym. Loads of sports clubs.
Financial help: SU/university hardship fund can give short-term loans. Also access fund for disabled, single parents, etc.
Jobs: Some part-time work at SU; seasonal work, eg boat show in summer; bar and shop work always available. Job Shop and e-jobs service in careers advisory service.
Best features: State-of-the-art facilities; cultural diversity.
Worst features: Student apathy.
